What was the moment you realized you wanted to be a filmmaker?.
.
I remember being in high school, helping my friend Sherry with a video. The process was exciting. She filmed me walking across the school roof in the middle of the night. My first stolen location I suppose. The process was fun and interesting. I felt a sort of ownership of an activity no one was asking of me, that wasn't homework or a requirement..
The end result was a series of visuals that evoked a sense of eerie loneliness. In one instance, Sherry became interested in the sound and image of a water fountain running in an empty school corridor. That image and texture filled me with a sense of dread. I realized this was something I could get excited about..
.
When did you first feel like a director?.
.
On the soundstage at AFI. Our production designer and DP had worked together to create a really intricate lighting rig for this horror film I was directing about a women and a man trapped in a box underground. I had asked for an unconventional look and set piece, and I had the pleasure of witnessing the magical results of collaborating with artist who respect each other..
.
How was being a part of the Film Fatale's community helped you?.
.
I was afraid that I would continue existing in a world where women would have to continue to compete directly with each other for the small number of positions afforded to women by the industry. But as a result of my experiences with the Fatales community, I've seen how women can strengthen and challenge each other in the best way possible..
.
What is your favorite movie?.
.
Today it is The Age of Innocence, the Scorsese adaptation of the Edith Wharton novel. Burt Remains of the Day may be another favorite. Also, 2001 and Blade Runner: The Director's Cut..
.
What is your favorite bad movie/guilty pleasure?.
.
Furious 7..
