Berry Gordy may have made the label, but Mrs. Maxine Powell was a big part of the magic. Her in-label charm school honed rough diamonds into "class" acts, ready for the mass market.  "Class will turn the heads of kings and queens." (Or at least make musical groups more accessible to racially anxious white people.)
