The Revolution Will Be Twerked
Twerking scholar Kimari Brand sees twerking as much more than a dance. She twerks for empowerment and for resistance, using her body a metaphor for freedom from colonized lands and subjugated peoples. And she challenges the world to take her no less seriously because her area of study happens to be her ass. Which is a challenge, because as Sesali Bowen describes in Feministing, you're fighting a domino effect of disrespect that seems a little like one of those cable commercials: "When you twerk, you move your ass. When you move your ass, people think less of you because of sexism and sex-shaming. When people think less of you, you are more likely to be targeted by authority figures for assumed transgressions. When you are more likely to be targeted by authority figures for assumed transgressions, you go to jail. Don’t go to jail, stop twerking." Or don't, and make it your work to make people understand why no one should have to.
