Jennifer Sky was a teen fashion model, which, as she points out, is something people usually look at as a stroke of unbelievable good luck (and genes). But her experiences left her traumatized, and now she's fighting back to protect underage girls from the largely unregulated and highly unscrupulous fashion industry. We've let the veneer of glamour obscure the reality for too long. They may be made up to look like women, but most of the faces you see in fashion magazines are the faces of children.  Where else in America can children work for unlimited hours without legal protections? A new law passed in NY is the very beginning of the acknowledgment of the problem. But there is obvious resistance from an industry that prefers young models not just for their flawlessness, but for their meekness. If it gets harder—and more expensive—to work with younger women, will we have to start seeing more women instead of girls?
