pass it on...
also, there's this...
By the way, Max, you are confusing “life expectancy” with “life span”. The life expectancy of the average human has increased dramatically recently due to a much lower infant mortality rate as well as people not dying from things like tetanus or infections, due to the discovery of antibiotics, etc. The human life span has not increased in about 40,000 years.
Genetically modifying food is not the same as hybridizing it. Genetically modified foods have artificially introduced genomes in the DNA. i.e. Pig genes in tomatoes, fish genes in apples, etc. Hybridizing is natural genetic modification is not.
25K Farmer-you want to eat genetically modified food from a seed produced on a farm where farmer’s wear HAZMAT suits, more power to you!!!
I watched this interview one with a GMO-seed pushing farmer talking about glyphosate being so safe you could drink it. So the interviewer brought out a bottle of glyphosate and said, “OK. Let’s see”. It’s funny how he suddenly & quickly changed his mind.
This is in response to “Healthy, Bio-Dynamic Vegan” who wrote a misleading post about grandparents living longer than their descendants and cancer rates increasing. Neither of these are true. Life expectancy (both globally and in the western world) has been increasing steadily for many decades. We are living longer now than at ANY other time in human history. For almost all of human history life expectancy stayed constant at a mere 25 years. Our long lives are the very reason that incidences of cancer are increasing. Many causes of death have been successfully managed, people are living longer, and quite literally you “have to die of something”. Age-adjusted cancer rates have declined for many decades and are continuing to do so as medicine improves. It’s that simple.
The WebMD article used by “Healthy, Bio-Dynamic Vegan” to supposedly support their case actually does the opposite. The reason for increasing incidence of cancer is clearly stated as “Populations are growing throughout the world and populations are aging, which is why the number of cancer cases and deaths are going up globally”. Please think about what that statement means. If you age-adjust the rates, cancer is slowly being beaten.
Modern medicine and agriculture have had a profound effect on improving our quality and length of life. They don’t deserve uninformed fear-mongering. Can there be improvements? Of course. But please don’t stick your head in the sand and spout fantasies.
Eating GMO’s is a insurance program that protects the Social Security program for the rest of us. Have you ever really looked at the Walmart type customer and diagnosed their health at a glance? It is very sad to note the vast number of food deserts across the U.S. where wholesome organic foods are not available. I would love to run a statistical analysis of population’s health status and organic food consumption. In closing, purchase only foods from the outer shelves in your grocery store….. the foods on the inner shelves are only food-like substances. Choose quality over quantity, choose organic whenever possible and loose weight in the process. Organic food costs are affordable compared to health maintenance costs on society.
I see a whole lot of fallacies in the arguments here. The truth is science can not find any benefits to eating organic. Anyone who argues that they feel better, their moods improved, they lost weight, or their health improved by switching to organics is caving to their confirmation bias. Weather a chemical is synthetic or natural is no indication of weather or not it is safe of healthy and please start learning to use the word chemical correctly. you are all made up of chemicals and need to ingest chemicals to survive, we call those vitamins and minerals.
Not exactly a controlled study now is it. Just switching to whole foods and away from overly processed food may also show a significant change.
But unless you have two sets of people eating basically the same thing with one set being the usual most common and generic brands and the other group with just specifically organic, it isn’t really telling you anything. Hell they could have gone 2 weeks of reducing their diet to half the total calories and seen a significant change. They could have double their water consumption and seen a significant change.
This story, while appealing really says nothing specific.
I don’t doubt there is a benefit to eating only organic but this video is misleading and very skewed.
I find it interesting that all of the pro-sustainable, pro-organic food and farming comments are from people with names – real people. All of the pro-GMO comments are from Anonymous. Got something to hide? Not a real person? Agribusiness corporation?
Switching over to Organic my mood swings stopped, my ph was better, the unwanted facial hair stopped growing, I feel better, over all my body balanced out! The facial hair stop growing was enough for me! Lol
That’s why I use nutritional cleansing to help my body eliminate toxins. For more info check it out here http://tinapaulconnolly.isagenix.com
Genetically Modified and Cross- breeding for certain traits are not the same thing.
My husbands ongolagist said on being asked if eating organics would help said “you can’t control acid rain don’t waste your money”
Ok I’m not an expert, but I am studying genetics and I work in a cancer research lab, and I seriously don’t understand why people have such issues with genetically modified foods. We’ve been genetically modifying our food for ages through selection of those crops which best served our needs, ie “unnatural” selection. Ever look at an unfarmed banana? Wonder how seedless grapes were made? Now, instead we’re genetically modifying in a more direct way, by adding genes for traits that will serve us well.
I can understand not wanting to ingest pesticides, the issue with the unsustainable methods of farming, and the unsanitary, cruel, and grossly inefficient methods that we produce meat. Hell, I can get behind damn near every environmental issue but genetic modification.
Sustainably is a funny word.
Let’s mock farming practices that have upped yields by almost double over the last 30 years, in other words twice the production on the same acreage… By the way those same fields have been producing for 70 years plus
Its even funnier when a self proclaimed expert talks about pesticides taking nutrients out of the soul causing it to be dead.. Lol. I guess a naturally occurring soil protien grows legs and eat the nutrients. Where do you think pesticides come from?
What a quak!!
You want to be organic knock yourself out, but the stustability in large quantit is a joke and is dangerous to not only to the masses but also to native habitat for wildlife.
The key in farming is to produce more with less land all while producing a safe and predictable crop.
Organic goal is to pray on the uneducated and gullible masses so you pay a premium so they make up for their lessor yields.
I would just like to say, for the people commenting and saying it’s pointless to eat organic, that it doesn’t make a difference, think again. It’s not just your health that’s at stake. It’s the health of the planet and therefore of future generations. Maybe it’s true that some large scale organic farms don’t respect the land much more than conventional farms do. But do yourself a favor and go visit an organic farm near you. There are so many small organic farms out there that really respect the land they use and use techniques such as crop rotation to preserve the soil. They use SUSTAINABLE methods, and sustainability is our only hope to survive as a species. Spraying fields with pesticides until the soil is striped of all nutrients and then putting those nutrients back in through synthetic fertilizers is NOT sustainable! Eventually all the precious land we have will be useless because of our current agriculture system. It’s not just about how the food you eat affects your body, it’s about how it’ll affect the environment in the long run. I understand that the use of tractors and transportation both in the conventional and organic system is also a problem because of all the fossil fuels used, and I really hope that solutions will be found very soon to lower and eventually eliminate the need for fossil fuels. In the mean time, the least we can do is try to protect what little land we have to grow food on. If you make through this giant paragraph, thank you, and I hope this will make you think and consider the choices you make next time you buy food.
anyone notice that the same tests where conducted but NOT one of the ORGANIC PESTICIDES was tested for? Organic DOES NOT mean pesticide free. Organics are sprayed with more pesticides than conventional. Organics simply use old harmful pesticides that here deemed ineffective and more costly AND more destructive to the land. that is why we found alternatives. GROW A BRAIN!
The writer and readers of this article who take it at face value need to better educate themselves and stop spreading misinformation.
My farmer great grandparents and their parents, grew and ate food with no chemicals and drank no alcohol (also a chemical.) They lived long and died healthy, *in their sleep, of old age. The same goes for myself and all my friends who eat truly organic (more on that term after this comment) farm direct or self grown vegetables, are all healthy.
My grandparents started growing and eating food and drink with chemicals and some drank alcohol. Their children ate the same chemical laden foods. Both my paternal and maternal grandmothers died of cancer, as did several of their friends, siblings and children. My father died of heart disease. His first wife died of cancer.
After more chemicals in food and drink were introduced to food, cancer rates soared in the U.S. I got these statistics from CDC, AMA and BIA when I worked at an Indian Health Center.
Current relatives and friends, who grow and eat food without chemicals and avoid meat are healthy. Current relatives who eat food with chemicals: some obese others not, both getting cancer and heart disease. At least nine friends from childhood, who ate meat, or drank alcohol, and ate corporate chemical foods, contracted cancer. One became obese, depressed and killed himself. Three friends have heart disease.
After more chemicals were introduced to food and drink, cancer rates soared in the U.S. The same pattern of growing cancer rates connected to chemical laden foods and drink is occurring all over the world.
I attained these statistics from CDC, AMA, IHS (Indian Health Services) and BIA when I worked at an Indian Health Center.)
Global Cancer Rates Set to Soar by 2030
Worldwide cancer rates are set to jump more than 75% by 2030.
Important note: The term, “organic” that you buy in the supermarket is not truly organic.
Family Farmers – Remember! The USDA OWNS the “Organic” name
To sell your home grown fruit at the centrally planned…
Myself, and all of my friends that eat truly organic or bio-dynamic, and are vegans and vegetarians are all healthy. BTW the vegans are all healthier than the dairy eating vegetarians.
The truly non-organic corporate food eating and alcohol swilling friends and family members, are dropping like flies of cancer, heart problems, and some suffer from obesity and depression.
Anyone swearing by an organic diet is simply misguided. I suppose we shouldn’t vaccinate our children or drink municipal water either. Smh.
Nothing is free. What u don’t pay now, u will pay later. This is the American model of business and no one escapes it. So it all depends on your priorities. Eating better and less now (less so u stay healthy and spend less) and u don’t pay for heavy duty drugs later in ur life, or eat crap and end up with stents in ur arteries and shots of insulin. Ur choice. One thing for sure, we are the first generation of Americans that will live shorter (and poorer) than our parents.
So the rules in my household are these:
– do not buy something that has more than 3 ingredients (i. E. Bread is supposed to be flour water and yeast, the rest is cancer)
– eat 90% of plant based food (check the pie in ur plate, then check again)
– eat red, yellow and green every day (im not talking about m&ms)
– buy local as much as u can
– do not eat anything corn related
– wash everything in white vinegar.
U do this and u should feel already much better than u r now. Then think about switching to organics.
my husband had multiple myeloma since eating organic frutis and veggies now people are telling him how healty he looks what has he been doing? also he has alot more energy and feels better in general. True it costs a little more, but in the end it is so worth it
a person’s health is priceless….
So why did they not test for Rotenone and pyrethrin? Those are the pesticides that are used in organic farming. They are actually used at a much higher rate, since they are less effective. I bet the before/after of those would be dramatic too. But that doesn’t fit their narrative, so cherry picking data is better i guess.
I bet if I hacked off my member it would provide the whole organic community meat for a week because of all that fast food I ate
love reading all these opinions…here’s another: the real truth is if you buy organic that’s shipped from a country with no pollution regulations what’s the point? furthermore, I do manage to grow a little in my limited sunny space, but even in the Anarondacks, for example,”fresh” spring water is polluted by acid rain on winds from power plants in NY, etc. It is true that all those additives, even some in gluten free products aren’t loved by our bodies. Packaging of foods is also a huge part of why the air/water growing them is polluted…recyclable or not, it takes energy and creates waste to make containers for food, and fuel to transport it. We do have a community garden, farmer’s market, and get more tomatoes from one plant than we need which rot before I make time to can them…more of us would like to get everything we need in one convenient place…and complain about the price and pollution! I am no exception.
Eating organic is eating better. The typical american diet is load with sugar, fat, and salt and Coporate america is to blame. they have sold us on fun things to eat such as corn chips and cheese whiz. So when you eat organic you are eliminating coporate america foods. You will feel better and be healthier. You can go along way without going organic by eliminating coporate america foods from your diet and substituting fresh foods.
We grew up growing, canning, freezing, and cooking our own produce. It was a lot of hard work and a big commitment to have such a garden. So sure, just turn your lawn into a garden and most of you will end up with weeds. Those that make it work will find they are not in front of thier TV and are active in their garden. Healthier by default.
Coporate america wants you in front of the TV to see their advertisements. Stop empowering coporate america. Stop being brainwashed by the liberal media, the conservative media, and everything in between. Including those that are trying to convince you “organic” is better. They have an agenda as well.
Eat smart, avoid sugar, eat smaller portions, drink water, stay active, turn off the TV.
Stop eating meat and organic produce is affordable
100% of people that eat organic foods will die!
In a world where medicines serve as a crutch to remove all personal responsibility on health and things like iPhones, cable television, high speed internet, seasonal clothing updates, $25k base automobiles are seen as “needs” instead of “wants”, how can you blame society for making more room in their budget for these symbols of status (or, at least, the desire to feel as though we’re keeping up with our neighbors)? Consumerism tells us how to act, how to eat, what to eat, what to wear, and what our kids must have to “fit in”, so why should we expect our brothers and sisters to spend more of their money on making themselves healthier when we’re told to drive our dollars to material possessions, especially when we all are now provided with health insurance plans that cover medications that alleviate the symptoms of a poor diet? If it was a higher priority for society to value quality food over overly processed junk food made for convenience, supply would be higher and price would be driven down as more pressure is put on farmers to grow organic foods over their pesticide/insecticide laden counterparts. Unfortunately, becoming healthier is seen more as an aesthetic enhancement (yes, it can do that) than it is a long-term solution to reduce the likelihood of chronic disease and the need for medications that help us get by day-to-day until we pass away. As someone who lost my father to colon cancer as a teenager, I can’t tell you how much I wished he would’ve taken greater care with his diet so I could have him around from all of ups and downs I’ve had in my life. I hope anyone reading this understands my perspective…put a greater emphasis on food quality…it doesn’t mean life has to be miserable by eating foods you hate all the time. Start by getting to a 50/50 diet of clean vs. not-so clean foods and work toward an 80/20 split of clean to not-so clean. You don’t have to be completely restricted…it’s all about moderation!
Let’s face it, organic is expensive and most people can’t afford it. Also, farmers markets in my area are also more expensive (even when only looking at what is in season and local). Not everyone has a place to do their own gardening much less raising chickens, which is illegal where I live. As for buying a cow or pig and having it butchered? Where do you suggest someone keepbthat much meat? Not everyone has a deep freeze or room to put one. It’s a nice idea and I agree it’s healthier but it’s not an option for everyone.
And not everyone spends $5 on a coffee every morning. We eat at home because fast food is expensive and we can’t afford it.
For all those bitching about cost, here are some ideas for you; join a local organic co-op, get off your ass and join a community garden, if you have a lawn turn it into a garden, think outside the box. Think it’s not important what you put into your body, think again. Is it more work well yes but it’s worth it. We help people turn the yards into high producing gardens. Do you know what a Victory garden was? Look it up. For the person that said “The obesity problem we have is a sign of prosperity, civilization, and peace”. Is that some kind of a joke? Obesity is mostly related to bad food and life style choices.
What crap. People are living longer than ever and are healthier. The obesity problem we have is a sign of prosperity, civilization, and peace. If you want to go back to pre-WWII days with thousands dying every year from food poisoning, or malnutrition, be my guest. EVERYTHING is much better today. You just can’t satisfy the leftist elitists who want heaven on earth and want to define it for you.
we switched some time ago but the reality is it doubled our groceries bill each week, from $100 to $200 + USD for two people with one small chunk of meat and 8 apples for the week. The cost is ridiculous, the main problem is the major advocates are upper middle class folks with mounds of disposable cash and the grocers know this.
I especially like the person talking about buying $5 coffees and $20 lunches. This is the most irritating thing about organic advocates, almost none of them are blue collar working class folks and almost all of them like to act like they are superior. The facts are as a blue collar worker and if we had 3 kids it would be very hard to use only organics if we didn’t live on a farm. Even if we lived at a farm I am away from home at least 13 hours a day leaving little time for gardening or raising livestock. I also liked how the person insulted my intelligence with their last sentence.
Shop at farmers markets locally. Organic produce is affordable if you eat what is in season. Not only will you save money and get healthy, you’ll realign your body with the seasons. Organic is the only way to avoid GMO’s. I have no interest in eating tomatoes with fish genes spliced into them. You can also raise many vegetables in containers if you don’t have a garden. ( we live in a city).
If you cant afford the big organic overhaul, you arent drinking starbucks… mcdonalds coffee is a buck any size lol… and my drive thru habits are a dollar menu. Fresh is best but i cant always do it. Each person is diffrent, life is short, do what you want… who really cares?
grow yourself, keep chickens, learn to jar your own foods. Meat? go by a cow or pig from Amish farm have it butchered. split it or quarter it. you will be amazed how much $ you will save in the long run. Also, you cant beat fresh!I don’t always believe the word that is printed “organic” , it should say “sucker”……
To go organic, let’s face it. You have to sacrifice something else. What are you willing to give up in the name of clean food? I don’t shop the inner isles for my food. So there are my automatic savings- I only get TP and the occasional household products. I don’t use fabric softener anymore because I want to keep the water supply clean for your family and mine. You have to break the chains of addiction to the chemically created food on the inner shelves of the grocery store. The food companies are only in it for the profit, not for your health or mine. Convenience is the reason I suspect it’s hard to go “organic” because you have to prep your own food. Family time at the counter and table is the reward!
Check discount type stores for organic foods…I have found organic honey, agave nectar, canned beets, granola bars and tea at Big Lot’s. Frozen blueberries and strawberries, bananas, chicken broth and hamburger at Aldi’s. I keep a list for each store and go once a month. These stores are here in Ohio.
Hi praise the lord , I am a pastor in Kenya , serving the lord and doing farming to help the poor and the needy with food.please kindly help us with farming implements;corn seed ,green houses etc to the church .
If you had a glass of pure clean water would you drink it if someone put a little poison in it?
If you look for the same foods except the meat and produce you can find the same things at Frys in the organic section . I found out for myself !
Love organic foods as they taste like the real thing! Do a taste comparison and you will decide to switch!!! There is a big difference!
Better to spend the extra money now on organics instead of down the road in medical bills
It’s spelled Annette.
I have complained for years about cost.. But recently just made the commitment! I buy almost all organic now.. Don’t forget about the products we use too!! Toothpaste, deodorant etc.. I’ve had that part down for years now.. So now our diet.. We now eat reasonable portions and all clean food… Despite the kids complaining, it is going well.. It feels do good! Challenging to eat clean and eat a little less. Bottom lines… It’d a commitment to my health and piece of mind knowing I have the control over what we eat.. Not the big food corps etc..
Hey annon poster-
there’s no doubt organic is best, even though that category is still somewhat questionable in is proceeding and handling, but your statement regarding cost only being a few dollars more is false.
Most organic is 2x as much at the least and few can afford this ‘luxury’.
To the original poster- if someone’s too lazy to MAKE their breakfast or lunch and is going out and spending $20/day on coffee and lunch…. They’re not going to scramble a fucking egg anyways.
For those who say organic isn’t affordable… Consider this, you will likely spend $5 on *one* coffee… Or $10 on breakfast, maybe $15/20 on lunch on any given day… A carton of organic eggs is 5$… breakfast for a whole week. And organic meats and vegetables are only a few $ more than their inorganic counterparts… Sure it can jack up your grocery bill a bit, but if you’re willing to spend that 5$ on your morning coffee… Why make the fuss over spending a little more for healthier food that you use to prepare your daily meals. And for women… Listen up! Organic matters to your fertility! I can’t tell you how often women have trouble conceiving and think they are infertile only to change their diet and consume organic meats and dairy… Then bam, pregnant. Your liver goes into overdrive filtering all the shit you eat and doesn’t get the chance to regulate the things it naturally would which leads to a build up in things like estrogen and it messes with things like ovulation. (Don’t forget about estrogen and other hormone driven cancers… Which have also been on the rise…) still want to make a fuss over that extra 50$ on your grocery bill?
Would do it if it was affordable..but seriously, who can?
Eating organic doesn’t give perfect health so to use someone’s headaches as an excuse not to eat healthy is like saying you won’t wear a seatbelt because you know someone who died even though they wore one. That’s not reasonable. Would you drink pesticides from a bottle? Then why slowly ingest them if you have another option?
